The essence of existence: The Reinking Collection at the WAI Galleries
Since its founding, the Reinking Collection sees itself as a place of encountering and further developing art and man. Over the past twenty years, the Reinking Collection has repeatedly expressed this concept in the form of numerous exhibitions and promotions and has also confronted existential human questions. The collection has found a permanent home in the WAI Galleries’ rooms for the first time and at the same time gained the opportunity to present itself with a richness that has been unseen until now.
An outstanding feature of the Reinking Collection is the way in which the exhibits communicate with the viewer. The dialogue is characterised by a strong sense of intimacy that stirs individual thoughts, memories, associations and feelings that ultimately turn the collection into a place of reflection. Through the intensive encounter with one’s self - with and between the exhibits - the Reinking Collection becomes what it strives to be: a chance to centre and position oneself with the help of art.
Whether classical positions of contemporary art or contributions by the youngest generation of artists - the works of the Reinking Collection trigger an immediate reaction. In a striking yet sensitive way, they bring the viewer's own position to mind. By raising challenging questions about human existence, time, space, perception and identity, the art becomes a domain for one’s own reflections.
ARTEFACTS
Indigenous ritualistic and everyday objects place a different light on contemporary art - and play a special role in the Reinking Collection.
The focus of the Reinking Collection is on installations, objects, video works and works of art to be implemented or that simply exist as ideas. Transient, extremely fragile structures are juxtaposed with everyday objects that have become art. Selected artefacts from indigenous cultures expand the context of Western positions and bear witness to the original significance of art in the context of human development. Contributions that result from the artist’s engagement with nature and its elements, as well as works that question the system of art, form a versatile collection of contemporary art whose silent presence inspires and welcomes dialogue to take place.
